Pete served as the 16th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2005-2007, where he served as the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001-2005, the first Marine to serve in either of these positions. He retired in 2007 after more than 40 years of active service.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the National War College, Pete holds a master’s degree from George Washington University. He also attended Harvard University for the senior executives in national and international security program. In 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor a President can bestow.
He serves on the board of directors of several corporate entities involved in management consulting, private equity, and IT security. He is a member of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) senior advisory group, and a Distinguished Visiting Research Scholar for Fordham University.
