Remote valves vulnerable

Block valves are critical to controlling the flow of oil and gas within pipelines. This makes them a prime target for vandals.

 

To monitor tampering, an oil and gas company stationed high-definition cameras at its block valve sites. Data from these cameras was sent to the home office in Texas only when there was an alert.

 

Transmission speed vs security

Unfortunately, this setup proved problematic. The valves were in remote locations, so bandwidth was limited. The company’s virtual private network (VPN) took far too long to transfer visual data securely. Consequently, it was forced to transmit the alerts and visuals over unsecured lines.

 

SDY Technologies was summoned to fix the problem.

 

High-definition video over low bandwidth

We deployed our Dispersive™ Virtualized Network (Dispersive™ VN) to monitor these same block valves. The network was able to transmit the high-definition video efficiently and securely over the low-bandwidth connection. Dispersive™ VN optimized data transmission to get the most out of the first- and last-mile connections.
