Thwarted Throughput

At a major provider of specialty construction and engineering services to US electric utilities, field technicians were frustrated. They required high-resolution graphics to make time-critical repairs and services. However, when they ran their graphics application over a virtual private network (VPN) on their cellular devices, download speeds slowed to a crawl. In fact, the app barely worked. Desperate for a solution, a
few technicians even disabled the VPN to boost throughput speeds.

 

An Immediate Solution

Equally frustrated, the provider’s IT department reached out to SDY Technologies. We worked with them to incorporate Dispersive™ Virtualized Network (Dispersive™ VN) software into the company’s proprietary iOS app. Within weeks, an alpha version of the integrated app was deployed to a select group of technicians to conduct side-by-side comparisons.

 

First, they measured the throughput of the VPN at 1 Mbps. They then turned the network off and measured throughput with straight point-to-point protocol (PPP)
with no encryption. It was 2 Mbps—twice as fast as the VPN throughput.

 

The technicians then activated their Dispersive™ VN. Download speeds shot up to
4 Mbps—four times that of VPN and twice the throughput speed of straight PPP
without encryption.

 

Faster Than Ever

Word spread. Other field technicians lined up outside the IT office to get access to the new app with Dispersive™ VN. Soon they were enjoying post-VPN advantages.

 

They didn’t just download without interruption; they downloaded faster than they had without VPN. Improved connections meant improved efficiencies for the service provider. And security was not only maintained but enhanced, eliminating worries about the risk of intercept.
